ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Michigan guard Trey Burke as its Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week for games ending the week of Sunday, Jan. 6. The USBWA’s weekly honor is presented by Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook and will be handed out each Tuesday through Feb. 19 this season.

Burke

As the Big Ten Conference Player of the Week, Burke was nominated for the weekly award, which was chosen by a representative of the USBWA board of directors from a list of Division I conference players of the week.

Burke, a 6-0 sophomore from Columbus, Ohio, helped the Wolverines remain a perfect on the season (15-0) with a pair of Big Ten wins at Northwestern (94-66) and Iowa (95-67). The two conference wins marked the first time Michigan has scored 90-plus points in back-to-back Big Ten games since the 1999-2000 season.

For the week, Burke averaged 21.0 points, 8.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals while shooting 61.5 percent (16-26) from the field and 55.6 percent (5-9) from 3-point range. At Northwestern, he scored 23 points to go with five assists and career-best four steals. He followed that by recording his third double-double against Iowa with 19 points and a career-best 12 assists. After opening the game missing his first three shots, he closed making seven straight, going 7-10 from the field.

This is the fourth season that the USBWA has selected a national player of the week. The weekly Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week will be considered for the Oscar Robertson Trophy watch list, which will be released at mid-season.

Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player.

Oscar Robertson TrophyAt the conclusion of the regular season, the USBWA will name finalists for the award, which is voted on by the entire membership. The winner of the Oscar Robertson Trophy presented by Aflac will be presented by its namesake, Oscar Robertson, at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 15, 2013, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. TheHenry Iba Coach of the Year Award and the Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award will also be presented at the gala to be held annually the Monday following the NCAA Men’s Final Four.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season. Notes: This week’s poll includes four sources: Hoopniks, ESPN, USA Today and PrepNation. MaxPreps also released polls during this period but I haven’t included them, due to the fact that they segment private academies from public high schools. I am not sure how, or if, I will incorporate their rankings back into the cumulative rankings.

Still not much change at the top of the poll, but a major loss by Huntington Prep this week pushed some significant movement, including dropping Prep from #3 to #9 and introducing Prime Prep, who dealt Huntington their loss, into the rankings at #10. The overall movement of the rankings is relatively consistent, but this week I’ve expanded the list to show the Top 30 True Rank teams just because, well, I have the data and I think it’s interesting. Note that two NC teams, Olympic and West Charlotte, do appear on a few polls but only Olympic has a high enough value to land in the cumulative rankings.

Finally: In the poll listing, the ‘high’ value represents the highest ranking in any poll that team received during the ranking period.
‘Qty’ represents how many polls they were ranked in. ‘AVG’ represents their average ranking in all polls where they were ranked.

Semaj Christian

By James Blackburn

Game Scouted: Xavier @ Wake Forest
Wake wins 66-59
Box Score

Semaj Christon (G, 6’3”, FR)

Stats
34 min, 3-11 FG, 8-10 FT, 3 reb, 2 assist, 5 TO, 5 fouls, 14 TP

Strengths
Semaj is able to play either guard position equally well, which you do not frequently see on the collegiate level. Physically superior to most of his opponents, he is a legitimate 6’3” with solid length and excellent athleticism. Offensively, Semaj is at his best in transition as he gets up the floor quickly with or without the ball. Once he has the ball he does a great job of attacking the defense and drawing fouls. He is a terrific slasher in the half-court as well and uses his superb athleticism and first step to get to the rim. Played more of a playmaker role in the first half, but became more aggressive offensively and looked for his shot more in the second half. Was able to get to the line, which is where he scored most of his points tonight, going 8-10 (Is not shooting well from FT stripe for the year- but has nice stroke- and did well from line this game.). Did not shoot much from the perimeter this game, other than a couple of midrange pull-ups off the dribble, but showed a nice stroke with good lift and release. Did not see him shoot any set shots.

Made good decisions off the P/R and hit the roll man several times to set them up for good shots. Keeps head up and makes the right decision. Tight dribble; highlight reel ball handler who can slither his way through traffic w/ the ball in his hands; has a really nice in-and-out dribble move. Capable of scoring tough shots from tough angles and can create his own shot. Solid passer overall who doesn’t dribble when he doesn’t have to; gets rid of the ball quickly and passes on time; doesn’t waste his dribbles; dribbles to create passing angles; constantly scanning the floor; knows where pass is supposed to go. Capable of running an offense and will only get better as he plays the PG more. Smooth and fluid- can change his shot mid air. Also does a nice job of using body to protect ball. Changes speeds well and he has that extra gear to attack the rim. Does a nice job of slithering to the rim and finishing in creative ways. Sets his man up to go off screens on the ball and away from the ball and moves pretty well without the ball (vital in Xavier’s system).

Good defender at this point who can defend on the ball and off the ball. Stays alert and keeps solid defensive stance when playing off the ball. Capable of being elite defender at next level as he possesses a solid wing-span, athleticism, and good defensive instincts (leads team in steals). Contests shots on the perimeter.

Weaknesses
Needs to get stronger frame; attacks rim hard and is not afraid of contact, but needs to improve upper body strength to avoid injuries at next level. Got caught on screens away from the ball too easily. Doesn’t seem to go all out on every possession. Needs to be more consistent and keep a high motor.

Can go either way but is more explosive going to his right and prefers to attack going to his right. Decision making could stand to improve to a degree; gets out of control at times in transition and gets ahead of himself, but is averaging more assist then turnovers so far this season.

Didn’t see him shoot much outside this game. Didn’t see him shoot any three-pointers or set shots. Must improve FT stroke- shoots less then 60% from the line. Doesn’t have a bad stroke, but doesn’t have the confidence to shoot it much from outside at this point- has attempted only 13 three pointers through 13 games this season (including this one) and has made only 2. His shoot will come around, needs to get more reps and shore up consistency.

Overview
Struggled for the most part this game and fouled out with less than 2 minutes to play in the game. Had a tough time finishing his drives and went 3-11 from the field. Despite these numbers, Semaj’s game is built for the next level as he excels in isolation and P/R situations. At the pro level, given more room to operate and freedom in the offense, his game should progress. Xavier starts him at the SG spot, but he would play the PG at the next level. Did play PG the majority of game after starting at the off-guard position.

Is a two time A-10 Rookie of the Week so far this season and entered the game leading Xavier in ppg (13.4), asp (5.1), and spg (1.5). Went to Brewster Academy and helped lead team to a 33-1 record a prep school national championship. Was a 4-star recruit out of HS and was a top 5 PG in his class nationally.

John Wall/Dontell Jefferson type player- same body type, athleticism, quickness and attacking the rim style of play. Has a high upside and has is an intriguing overall prospect. NBA teams love quick athletic guards who can both score and make plays. Scouts should keep an eye on his progression as both a shooter and his development into a playmaking PG. If he continues to pile up assists and can improve his 3-point shooting, don’t be surprised if he leaves school early for the NBA.

Cody Zeller

By James Blackburn

Game Scouted: Indiana @ Iowa

Indiana Wins 69-65

Box Score

Cody Zeller (7’0”, C, SO)

Stats
33 min, 7-12 FG, 5-5 FT, 10 reb, 1 st, 1 blk, 4 TO, 19 TP

Strengths
Cody is a highly skilled seven footer who runs the floor and rebounds the ball well. This generally sums up most of Cody skills in one sentence. Zeller’s offensive skills were on full display this game as he showed the ability to put the ball on the floor and drive from the three point line to his left and finish with a lefty lay-up and showed the ability to be highly efficient in the post with his back to the basket. He has a nice back to the basket game and can score with either hand. He does a nice job of dipping his shoulders and getting low when in post and when driving from perimeter. Draws contact inside and he either scores or draws the foul when he is in post up situation in one on one situation. Excellent finisher- finishes at rim with 2 hands and has solid base- going off of 2 feet. Can finish with contact. Not afraid to fight for post position and he has good hands. Gets easy baskets by running the floor and being in the right position offensively. Did a nice job this game of ducking in on the post and securing position.

Takes advantage when going to the FT line. He was 5-5 from the line this game and is shooting over 70% from the charity stripe so far on the season. He has a high release and his shot looks fluid as he uses his legs and arms in rhythm. He didn’t shoot any perimeter shots this game (outside of a FT), but with the form I saw on his FT’s, I would venture to say he can shoot the midrange fairly well.

Zeller is a very good rebounder who finds his man and boxes out on the defensive end and attacks the offensive glass hard and stays active- hard to box out. He is averaging over 7 boards a game this year. He is also an underrated athlete. He had a big time 2-hand put back dunk attempt from practically outside of the lane that he missed- but was impressive. Does a good job tipping out balls on the offensive glass when he doesn’t have position to grab it for himself.

Quick hands for a player of his size defensively. Is usually in good help position and knows where the ball is at all times. Does a good job of coming over and taking away the baseline. Did a good job in the second half of staying straight up and using 7’ frame and wingspan to contest shots and not foul. Moves well enough as a big man to hedge screens- just tends to reach in at times when hedging when he doesn’t need to. Showed the ability to slide his feet and defend on the perimeter- does a nice job of contesting shots on the perimeter as well.

Weaknesses
Has a slight build and he seemed to get pushed and posted up deep against some bigger and stronger Iowa players. Gambles a bit on defense – reaches in or lunges in for steals and this caused him to be out of position. Picked up a bad foul where he was reaching in near his own basket in the backcourt, should have been sprinting back defensively and was reaching in. Did not run the floor very hard to get back defensively- not near as hard as he does on offense. Needs to work on his post defense to a degree- definitely not an imposing defender. Sees the ball well, but loses man or player in his area at times.

There was not a lot to criticize on the offensive end from tonight’s game. Not an impressive screener- not a bad screener, but not a great one either-inconsistent- sets some wide/hard screens and then sets some soft screens. Was neutralized most of the latter part of the second half when Iowa was playing a zone- struggled to find place in offense by roaming along the baseline and was not very involved. Didn’t score for a span of 9 minutes where he should of demanded the ball more or found a way to contribute more offensively.

Overview
Solid bounce back game from Zeller after not getting the ball much at all in first half and picking up 2 fouls. Came out second half and scored 7 pts in first 3 minutes. Good teammate when on the bench- saw him standing up when out of game supporting and cheering on teammates and not sulking at end of bench when taken out. Even keeled when on the floor- no matter what is happening. Finished with more points and rebounds then his average this year. Even though he was credited with 4 turnovers this game in the box score, I think he was charged with a couple that were not his fault.

I believe he would be even better with a better PG on his team. Playing with an NBA PG will definitely help as he runs the floor well and gets solid post position. He is a skilled player who is also scrappy- took charges and dived on the floor for loose balls this game.

In my mind Zeller seems to be better fit as a role player at the next level. He is not a franchise player, and thus not worthy of a number 1 pick. He is a winner however and is a mobile 7’ who is skilled on the offensive end and is a solid rebounder, all solid qualities which would make him top 5 pick worthy. I see him being able to contribute right away and possibly starting on some non-playoff teams.

By Devin Masone

The HighSchoolOT.com holiday tournament in Raleigh, NC is definitely one of the top talent events over the holiday break. This year, several teams with high profile recruits – and some on the rise – were on hand.

Garner Magnet

Demarcus Sanford G “6’1” Senior: Slashing guard with speed. Excels best when he is exploding to the rim. Great finisher. Solid mid-range game. Needs to work on decision making.

Julius Barnes G “5’8” Sophomore: On of the quickest guards I have ever seen. He is a “TRUE” point guard. Kid has excellent vision and knows how to get the ball to his teammates. Don’t sleep on his scoring ability though. Barnes has a great all-around shooting set.

Goldsboro

Lonzia Tyson C “6’8” Junior: Skinny frame big who has shown some athletic ability. Good finisher around the rim and a very good soft jump hook.

Leesville Road

Shyheid Petteway G “6’2” Senior: Good body frame guard who plays hard on both ends of the floor. His effort is something to watch. A rebounding guard who gets most his points off of put-backs. Very skilled shot blocking guard.

Lemont Martin-White PG “6’0” Senior: Mid-speed guard with quick handles. At his best when he is set in a isolated play setting. Can beat you on the drive with his floater but good on penetration passing.

Reggie Jones F “6’5” Senior: Lanky forward who can play the guard position if needed. Good, solid rebounder and is at his best playing 15ft facing the basket. He has a solid mid-range shot and post moves and can get up for blocked shots.

Broughton

Devonte Graham PG “6’1” Senior: Had one of his best games verse Person. Graham showcased his passing ability and really had some impressive assists. He shot the ball very well the whole tournament and his three point and mid-range game looked exceptional.

James Hemphill F “6’6” Senior: Really aggressive player that you can tell works hard. Kid can really rebound and has a nose for the ball. Very explosive off the boards. He really needs a deeper shot variety to excel for college though.

Cameron Gottfried G “6’2” Junior: Really Good three point shooters with great form. One of the best transition passers I’ve seen all year. He’s a solid defenders and very coachable kid.

Jamie Rooker G “6’2” Senior: A very young senior who could really benefit if he re-classed. In my option he is a undersized forward. Rooker is very explosive and is always looking to attack the rim and finish. He tried many times to dunk on opponents best nationally ranked players. Very good rebounding guard who provides a spark to the team.

Person HS

Tyrone Outlaw Jr F “6’6” Senior: Strong bodies forward who can punish any team inside and out. Outlaw can body you inside, catch put backs inside, or kill you with threes. Watch out though they don’t call him “Flight 44” for nothing, you can jump with him but in most instances that doesn’t matter.

Logan Coates G “6’5” Senior: One of North Carolina’s hidden treasures. Coates is a coach’s dream. Very Coachable kid who understands the game. A high riser who will give you highlight dunks and a three point specialist who can give any team a scoring threat.

Holly Springs

Craig McDaniel PG “6’2” Junior: Guard who can really get to the basket and finish. He has a very skinny frame but can finish on almost anyone. Also very explosive by the rim, the kid can get up!

DJ Flippin F “6’6” Senior: Nice mid-range game and face up game. Handles are suspect. Could transform into a really good athletic guard with the right coaching at the next level.

JF Webb

Tyrek Beverly F “6’3” Junior: Good body frame forward who can easily transform into a guard. Good team player, nice shot and finisher.

Isaiah Hicks F “6’9” Senior: Hicks has really added a shot to his game. A former post only player, Hicks has added a nice 15+ foot shot that will only prepare and make him better for his transition to UNC next year. Of course Hicks did put on a nice dunk and block display for the fans who came out.

Mitron Terry G “6’3” Junior: A scrappy guard who has so much heart. Kid gives it 110% every time he is one the floor. He is a great penetrator, shooter and defender. He is really starting to make a name for himself.

Devonte Williams G “5’8” Sophomore: One of the most composed young guards I’ve seen in a while. Great young point guard who has a good floater and shot. Passing could be better but with Hicks & Terry alongside him he averages 4+ assist a game easily.

Word of God

Josh Newkirk G “6’2” Senior: Josh has really turned out to be a explosive guard. He has added a consistent shot and his signature floater looks good. Passing has really improved and he is at his total best in the transition game.

Shane Whitfield F “6’5” Senior: College ready body. Great all around player and competitor. Very strong and athletic. Whitfield is a matchup problem, he is able to beat you on the drive or get you with is jumper.

Tyrek Coger C “6’8” Senior: Coger has really been working on his game and it is showing. He is finishing around the rim more than ever. Soft hand big who used to have problem finishing is now all around the basket with layups and dunks. Coger has become a physical rebounder and free-throws have improved.

Jordan Whitfield G “5’9” 8th Grade: Younger brother of Shane Whitfield. The kid can shoot the three ball. He had a decent floater but tons of composer. Came off the bench all tournament and was a spark. He ended up being named to the all-tournament team.

Apex

TJ Evans G “6’1” Junior: Evans can score the ball no doubt about it. Kid knows how to get to the basket. Even if Evans doesnt make the basket he makes sure to draw contact and get to the line. His decision making is solid, but would love to see him pass more.

T.J. Wells “5’10” Junior: Gaurd with good handles and decison making. Would love to see him shoot more but a solid player.

Dudley HS

Sam Hunt PG “6’2” Senior: Confident guard & a great passer in transition. Great free-throw shooter which came crucial in Dudley’s close championship win over Garner.

Miller School

Isaac Copeland F “6’9” Junior: Good forward who has a excellent jump shot, 15+ foot jumper comes natural to him. He needs a bigger body to be a “TRUE” forward but definitely a high major forward prospect and top 20 caliber player in his class.

Aram Martin F “6’9” Senior: Very physical forward who likes to be involved in every play. A big who loves the three ball and can defiantly hit it. He is a shot blocking threat.

Kinston

Josh Dawson PG “6’1” Senior: Tough guard (physically and mentally). Dawson is a tough competitor that wants to win! He gives it his all every play and fans take note of it. He is a natural leader and a very good finisher. When his shot is on he is very hard to guard.

Brandon Ingram G “6’7” Sophomore: Reminds me a little bit of Wake Forest’s Aaron Roundtree but more athletic. Skinny frame but a 6’7 with the height and handles that Ingram has he is becoming almost every guards nightmare.

New Hampton School

Noah Vonleh PF “6’9” Senior: He really is any high school players matchup problem, he has a college ready body and honestly can play any position on the floor. He has great soft hands for a big. Powerful down low, but can also beat you off the dribble from behind the three point arc.

Travis Jorgenson PG “6’0” Senior: Very crafty guard who was really a crowd favorite. He’s not your fastest guard you will see but the kid can dribble and was crossing defenders right and left all week. He knows how to get to the hoop and finish when he needs to but a excellent team player and play maker with vision.

Tory Miller PF “6’9” Junior: Strong bodied and very physical player. He is involved in almost every play down low. At his best when he is on the block posting up. A solid rebounder and loves showing off his explosive side (kid dunks everything and with authority).

Cuthberton

Shelton Mitchell PG “6’3” Junior: Mitchell was one of my favorite players to watch. He’s not the most crafty player on the floor or fastest but he is a tremendous basketball player. The lefty has a very solid jumper and floater and he is a natural competitor. In his matchup verse NC State commit Antony “Cat” Barber he was composed and held his own. Coach Roy Williams and staff were on hand for all his games.

Hampton

Antony “Cat” Barber PG “6’2” Senior: Very fast guard who has many gears to his game and knows when to turn them on. Barber knew exactly when to turn on the jets, showcase his incredible handles or show the range from behind the arc. Barber shot very well the whole tournament and was a crowd favorite.

Desoto

Matt Jones PG “6’4” Senior: Very skilled guard who can shoot the three ball. He plays very poise and is a team leader. He knows when to score and when to do the small things to help his team win ball games. He fits perfectly in the Duke system and can be a threat for their squad right away.

Devin Wyatt F “6’7” Junior: Wyatt was a human pogo stick all week long. His jumping and shot blocking ability was on display. Every team had to go hard when they played Wyatt and Desoto otherwise your shot wouldn’t see the rim. Wyatt hustles on every play and run the floor well.

High Point Christian

Diante Baldwin PG “6’0” Senior: Baldwin was one of the players you watch and he looks like a ball player. Baldwin won the crowd over with his fearless play, he wasn’t afraid to play anyone. A excellent penetrator and finisher. A coaches dream, he is very coachable and knows how to run a team.

Notes: This week’s poll includes four sources: Hoopniks, ESPN, MaxPreps and PrepNation. There was no available poll from USA Today during this period.

Not much change at the top of the poll, but one item of note is that MaxPreps is not including many, if any, prep schools in it’s Xcellent 25 rankings, which are put together by writers and coaches. I’m not currently using their Freeman 25 rankings, which are computer generated.

Finally: In the poll listing, the ‘high’ value represents the highest ranking in any poll that team received during the ranking period.
‘Qty’ represents how many polls they were ranked in. ‘AVG’ represents their average ranking in all polls where they were ranked.
